Discover Aardenburg, one of Zeeland’s oldest towns
Cultuurforum, Zeeland’s newest museum, is located in one of the oldest towns in the country: Aardenburg. You and your family can experience Roman times in a surprising way. Did you know that there was a real castellum there almost 2,000 years ago? Remains of this fortress have been excavated in the town, as have many Roman artifacts.

At the Museum Cultuurforum, you can learn interactively how these objects were used in the kitchen or bathhouse, for example. You also can play authentic Roman games. Next to the museum is the Sint Baafskerk, the oldest church in Zeeland. A VR presentation takes you on a journey back in time.

Take a look at the history of Aardenburg
The centuries-old town of Aardenburg is a hidden gem in the Netherlands.

Anyone who loves history and surprises should definitely visit our town. The Museum Cultuurforum is the ideal starting point for a day trip. The Romans discovered the site and built a fort on a high sand ridge.

A few centuries later, monks from St. Bavo’s Abbey in Ghent founded a church on the same spot. In the Middle Ages, Aardenburg flourished thanks to the cloth trade. It was not only a Hanseatic city but also, for a short time, a depot for the German Hanseatic League. Both Bruges and Aardenburg benefited from their connection to the sea thanks to the Zwingeul.

Scientists only discovered about fifty years ago that Aardenburg is a rich archaeological site. The finds were so extensive that it was possible to prove that Aardenburg was an important Roman fortress between 150 and 275 AD. In our museum, we display many of these finds.
